The European project BIObec, funded with 1.5 million euros by the joint public-private initiative Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) within the framework of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, held a general meeting in Ireland this week. During the 27th and 28th of June, the 19 partners of this project, including CTA, discussed their progress and the next actions to be developed to promote training in the bioeconomy in Europe. The meeting was attended by María García and Antonio Hurtado, CTA’s Innovation consultants.

BIObec, led by Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna (Italy), aims to bridge the gap between the bio-based industry and the education system. To this end, it aims to establish six multi-level Bio-based Education and Training Centres (BBECs) to act as hubs or knowledge centres. These will be located in Mediterranean and Eastern European regions, as well as in Finland, Denmark, Ireland and Germany. Their target audiences include academic institutions, students, innovation bodies and policymakers.

CTA is working on the establishment of the Bio-based Training Centre in the Mediterranean, in a team composed of partners from Spain and Italy. It will develop educational methodologies and tools focused on topics such as agriculture and food. In addition, CTA is leading the work package focused on the replication of the BIObec concept and BBECs, designing a methodology to help establish the centres in other regions outside the project.

One of CTA’s actions to lead the replication of the BBECs is the organisation of a cross-fertilization seminar on bioeconomy and education that will take place on 6th September at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).
