PCT Cartuja grows by 4% and beats its historical maximum of entities, according to its annual inventory prepared by CTA
The PCT Cartuja entities that mainly carry out R&D&I activities belong to the Advanced Technologies area. The most knowledge-intensive sectors by volume and innovative activity of their entities in the Park (apart from research centers) are Energy and Environment, Electronics and Telecommunications, and Information Technology.

The Cartuja Science and Technology Park, whose management company reports to the Ministry of Economy and Knowledge of the Andalusian Regional Government, once again achieved historic figures in 2016. This year the venue welcomed 442 companies and organizations, 4% more than a year earlier. These entities generated direct employment of 16,700 workers, compared to 16,429 in 2015, and economic activity of €2,066 million, 4% higher than the €1,990 million recorded the year.

These data are taken from the report “Inventory and technological assessment of companies and organizations installed in the PCT Cartuja (2016)”, prepared by Corporación Tecnológica de Andalucía (CTA).

The strongest area in the Park continues to be Advanced Technologies, which brings together 214 companies, employing 8,859 workers and accounting for an economic activity of 1,161 million euros. It is followed, at a distance, by the Advanced Services area (with 115 entities, 4,802 workers and 602.5 million euros in turnover). In last place, General Services, which, with 113 companies, has 3,039 employees and 302.5 million in economic activity.

Within Advanced Technologies, the most representative sector is Telecommunications and Information Technology (with 95 companies, 4,429 workers and 501.1 million euros in turnover). The second most important sector is R&D Centers, with a total of 24, employing 2,017 workers. The sum of Telecommunications and IT and R&D Centers account for 74% of employment in the Advanced Technologies area.

PCT Cartuja is home to 28.31% of the total number of entities installed in the Andalusian technology parks and these, in turn, employ 35.04% of the total number of workers working in these enclaves. Their economic activity represents 36.7% of the total turnover of the Andalusian parks. With these figures we find that the PCT Cartuja consolidates its position as the first Andalusian science and technology park by economic activity, as the PTA Malaga recorded 1,758 million euros in 2016. In terms of employment, only the Malaga site exceeds the PCT Cartuja, with 1,000 more employees.

In global terms, the economic activity generated in the Cartuja PCT in 2016 represents an accumulated increase of 193% over the figures for the year 2000, with an increase of 1,362 million euros.

Radiography of companies

As a result of the 2016 report, it can be concluded that the average size of the companies in the Science and Technology Park is 38 employees, with an approximate turnover of 4.6 million euros per entity. Thus, average productivity per employee reached 123,700 euros per year.

The majority (87%) of the companies and entities located in the precinct are national capital. Twenty-five percent of them export both products and services.

68% of PCT Cartuja’s employees are university graduates, in addition to 7% with a doctorate degree. Particularly noteworthy is the 74% of graduates in Advanced Technologies, an area in which the number of PhDs reaches 10%.

Fifty-five percent of the workers are male. The majority of employment is concentrated in the 30 to 50 age bracket (64% of the total), while 21% are under 30 years of age.

These data are taken from the report "Inventory and technological assessment of companies and organizations installed in the PCT Cartuja (2016)", prepared by Corporación Tecnológica de Andalucía (CTA).

R&D&I

The PCT Cartuja entities that mainly carry out R&D&I activities belong to the Advanced Technologies area. It is these entities, together with those of the Advanced Services for Innovation sector of the Advanced Services area, that make up the innovative core of the park and, therefore, sustain the competitiveness of PCT Cartuja as a whole. The most knowledge-intensive sectors by volume and innovative activity of their entities in the Park (apart from research centers) are Energy and Environment, Electronics and Telecommunications, and Information Technology.

91% of the personnel dedicated to R&D&I activities have a university degree. Of these, 40% hold a doctorate degree. This high level of qualification, in line with the development of this type of high added value activity, is indicative of the Park's capacity to attract and retain talent.

In 2016, a global investment of 131.6 million euros in R&D&I activities is estimated, which represents 6.4% of the PCT's total economic activity, a figure well above the Andalusian and Spanish averages (located at 1.02% and 1.22% of R&D expenditure with respect to GDP, respectively). In that year, 713 R&D&I projects were developed.

Last year, the number of patents granted by companies or entities of PCT Cartuja reached 28, half of them in the industrial sector. In addition, 29 more patents were applied for during the year (pending resolution). Also noteworthy is the number of research groups operating in the PCT Cartuja, which exceeds 200 (7 of them started in 2016).

According to the CTA study "the PCT Cartuja is postulated as a professional development opportunity for university students". Thus, the number of University graduates who have been hired has increased from 54 in 2015 to 144 in 2016, almost threefold.
