The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of the Regional Government of Andalusia and Technological Corporation of Andalusia (CTA) have presented the results of the European ICT-BIOCHAIN project. It is coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and started in 2018 with the aim of digitising the biomass supply chain. Since then, the project has developed a platform to connect biomass distributors with ICT solution providers. In addition, it has prepared a roadmap and e-learning materials to promote the stablishing of digital innovation hubs in the European bioeconomy.
The project has launched a digital innovation hub in Andalusia and South-East Ireland to provide access to expert knowledge, specialized information and good practices. The Andalusian Digital Innovation Hub hopes to keep the platform updated.
The ICT-BIOCHAIN platform prototype incorporates a data model to analyze biomass from olive groves, horticulture and algae. The platform allows identifying the sources of material by Andalusian region and characterizing them by their biorefining potential, that is, the process of converting biomass into biofuels, bioenergy and chemical products. Likewise, a catalog of more than 100 ICT solutions that could be implemented in the biomass supply chain has been elaborated.
This hub is supported by two strategic pillars of public-private cooperation on which the Andalusian Government is already working through the Ministry of Agriculture: the Andalusian Bioeconomy Cluster and the Andalusia Agrotech Digital Innovation Hub. These initiatives aim to accelerate the agri-food digital transformation and its value chain.
About the project
ICT-BIOCHAIN is a European project that has promoted the adoption of ICT, Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 solutions in the biomass supply chain. The project has been funded by the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking, within the framework of the research and innovation programme of the European Union (EU) Horizon 2020.
The consortium is made up of 8 partners from 5 European countries (Germany, Spain, Finland, Ireland and the United Kingdom). Among the Spanish members are the Ministry of Agriculture, CTA and SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS.
