CTA participates in a report of the Junta de Andalucía on Andalusian capabilities in AI
Presented the report 'Identification of Andalusian capabilities in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI)', promoted by the Junta de Andalucía and in which CTA and DaSCI have participated.
The areas with the greatest potential for applying this technology are ICT, biotechnology and health, industry and production processes, agri-food, public administration, logistics and transportation.

The Regional Ministry of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge and Universities has identified up to 189 entities with activity and research capacity in Artificial Intelligence (AI), of which 110 are companies, 56 belong to the Andalusian knowledge system and 23 are scientific and technological infrastructures. This is the result of the report ‘Identification of Andalusian capabilities in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI)’, promoted by the Junta and in which the Andalusian Technological Corporation (CTA) and the Andalusian Institute for Research in Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI) have participated. The Secretary General for Enterprise, Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the Department of Economic Transformation, Pablo Cortés, presented the main conclusions in a virtual conference that brought together nearly 250 people.

At the conference, the Andalusian business community was encouraged to innovate and adapt Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies because it is the right time and Andalusia has the necessary capabilities according to the study and the participating experts. In addition, the event presented the success stories of Andalusian companies that develop and apply AI to different projects, such as 4i, with a voice assistant for Industry 4.0; Isotrol, with a machine learning and predictive maintenance project for renewable energy generation plants; or Ghenova, with AI applied to naval design.

During his speech, the Secretary General emphasized that “according to the data obtained, Andalusia has top level companies and researchers, and has facilities and infrastructure ready to host testing and experimentation projects for Artificial Intelligence applications for any productive sector”. He also stressed that “this report is a reference tool for the technology ecosystem because it points out where and how to use Artificial Intelligence to increase its benefits and competitive advantages”.

Map of capacities

The Andalusian map of AI capabilities shows that ICT, biotechnology and health, industry and production processes, agri-food, public administration, logistics and transport, aerospace and retail are the sectors with the greatest opportunity for the application of AI-related technologies in Andalusia. Predictive analytics, machine learning and data science are the AI areas with the highest level of implementation in Andalusian companies.

According to the conclusions of the report, the 110 companies that make up this map are committed to R&D as a lever to innovate and become more competitive in their sectors, and more than half of them have products or services in a commercial state ready to be transferred to the market, a highly significant fact for the expansion of these technologies in the Andalusian productive fabric.

In the scientific-technical field, which included universities and research groups, R&D centers, technology centers or Digital Innovation Centers (DIH), the study highlights that 93% of the entities that make up the Andalusian knowledge system have capabilities in Machine Learning or Deep Learning, two of the most promising branches of Artificial Intelligence.

The event showcased the success stories of Andalusian companies that develop and apply AI to different projects such as 4i, Isotrol and Ghenova.

Scientific and technological infrastructures

Regarding scientific and technological infrastructures, which play an important role in the development and promotion of AI, the report indicates that they are available in all Andalusian provinces and in nine Andalusian public universities.

The analysis also diversifies its focus and identifies the main trends that are determining the growth of this technology, present and future market opportunities, and others such as public and private funding sources, of special interest to entities that carry out R&D&I projects in this field.

The Ministry of Economic Transformation considers AI as a transversal policy that promotes, together with the digital transformation of the Andalusian productive fabric, the promotion of advanced telecommunications, support for startups or the intelligent development of cities and territories, in all productive sectors.

This is a key technology for the Andalusian ICT sector, which during the second quarter achieved a year-on-year growth in employment of 12.9%, having far exceeded the employment volume of the pre-crisis years.

The report 'Identification of Andalusian capabilities in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI)' is now available on the Andalucía Conectada platform.
