Galpagro obtains a DIVA grant of €60,000 to apply Blockchain to traceability and marketing of EVOO
Develops the Olivetrace platform, which applies Blockchain technology to the management of information in the EVOO value chain to achieve full traceability from olive grove to packaging.
The tool provides transparency and security to farmers, transporters, oil mills, packers, certifiers, distributors and the end consumer.

The Cordovan company Galpagro has obtained a grant of 60,000 euros from the European DIVA project to finance the development of the Olivetrace platform, which uses Blockchain technology to improve the traceability and marketing of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO).

CTA (Technological Corporation of Andalusia) has advised and supported Galpagro in obtaining this aid from the European DIVA project, which is an H2020 initiative of cascade financing, that is, a tool being used by the European Union so that SMEs and small companies and entrepreneurs have the possibility of receiving European funding individually, without the need to participate directly in the large direct calls of the European Commission.

“Thanks to CTA, we have managed to promote this project that provides transparency and authenticity to a product as precious as olive oil,” says Galpagro’s CEO, Francisco Gálvez, who especially values the support and accompaniment provided by CTA during the development of this project.

For the development of the project, Galpagro has collaborated with the rural development consultancy Ruralpolis from Córdoba and the technology company IT Soft from Seville.

Traceability from the olive grove to the bottle thanks to Blockchain

Olivetrace is a Blockchain-based technology platform for the management of information in the EVOO value chain in order to improve traceability and marketing. The result is full traceability of the EVOO from the olive tree to the oil packaged in the bottle with a QR code with which all the information can be accessed.

In the first phase, the platform's users and beneficiaries are farmers, oil mills, packers and consumers, and in the second phase it is planned to develop utilities for transporters, certification companies and distributors. The final consumer will be able to have all the data on the origin, process and quality at the click of a button.

The Blockchain solutions applied in OLIVETRACE facilitate the management of information linked to production systems and transactions with a non-vulnerable method transmitting guaranteed truthful information along the entire value chain. The project will improve transparency of customer information, secure production and transaction systems along the entire chain, prevent fraud in any block of the value chain, and enhance corporate reputation through the application of the latest technologies.

The platform has been successfully tested during two campaigns at Galpagro's El Valenciano farm, located in Carmona (Seville), and with the collaboration of the Oleocano oil mill (Luque, Córdoba).

DIVA, financing for the digitalization of the agricultural sector

The project led by Galpagro is one of the 18 Andalusian initiatives subsidized by the European cascade financing project DIVA. In its three years of existence, DIVA has launched two calls for proposals, to which 396 projects have been submitted, of which 134 have been financed at the international level with 2.7 million euros. Of these, 36 were Spanish.

CTA is one of the 10 partners from 6 European countries that have participated in the European DIVA project, with a total budget of more than 4 million euros for three years, funded by the Horizon 2020 (H2020) program.

With the aim of boosting the digitization of the agri-food, environmental and forestry sectors, the main challenge of the DIVA project is to reduce the gap between ICT suppliers and the European agri-food industry. In addition to the calls for grants, DIVA has provided innovation support services, has created a network of experts to support SMEs and has mapped regional grants for technological development in Europe, among other actions.
